Valid elections or what?

Valid elections or what?

The Electoral Commission said on Monday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will serve a fourth term in the government, after her party obtained an absolute majority, amid a low turnout in the general elections in which the main opposition is competing.

Its team, the Awami League, won 165 of the original 224 seats in the elections that took place yesterday, Sunday. No minor differences have been announced yet.

The main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which participated in the 2018 elections but did not participate in 2014, boycotted the elections after Hasina rejected his demands to resign and allow a neutral authority to administer the elections.

Hasina accused the opposition of inciting the anti-government protests that have rocked Dhaka since late October, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people.
Bangladeshis largely refrained from participating in the general elections, which took place yesterday, Sunday, and were marred by violence.

Qazi Habib Awal, chief election commissioner, said the turnout was about 40 percent when the polls closed, compared to more than 80 percent in the last elections in 2018.
